Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery - Stenosis Micro-Decompression
Micro-decompression is an operation to remove pressure on nerves caused by spinal stenosis. This surgery involves a small incision along the midline of the back. The doctor remove the portions of tissue and bone which are compressing the nerve roots. Removing the cause of compression allows the nerves to heal. The length of the operation is typically an hour to an hour and a half, the overall length of the surgery is dependent on the number of vertebrae affected, whether or not the patient has undergone previous surgeries and the severity of the obstruction on the nerve roots. Most patients stay overnight for one day after surgery.
During a lumbar de-compression back surgery, a portion of the bone over the nerve root and/or disc material from under the nerve root is excised to provide more space for the nerve root and allow for improved healing.
